1) How old do I have to be?
I have coached children as young as six years, there is no upper limit as long as you are reasonably fit and can swim. Parental consent is required for the very young.

2) What if the waves are too big or rough?
Safety is my number one priority. If sea conditions are unsuitable I will find alternatives.

3) What qualifications are held?
40 years surfing experience, qualified and active lifeguard, Surfing New Zealand endorsed coach, St John’s emergency First Aid, Tour operators licence.

4) What sort of vehicle is used?
A Toyota Hiace Jumbo minibus, licenced to carry 11 passengers. The equipment is transported in a trailer.

5) What equipment is supplied?
Soft surfboards ranging from 8ft to 9ft for beginners and Bic surfboards for the more advanced. Leg ropes, wax. Hybrid wetsuits, most sizes and rash shirts.

6) How many in a class?
It could be from 1 to 10 or more The most efficient and safe ration is 1:6 that is 1 coach to six participants. If there are more than six participants I bring in experienced help to maintain safe ratios.

7) Where do you operate?
Anywhere from Waipu in the North to Coromandel in the south and of course the West Coast beaches near Auckland and Raglan. This gives the flexibility to go where the best conditions are on the day.

8) What if it is raining or stormy?
We will operate in most weather conditions. The sea state is the major factor, refer question 2.

9) What type of surfboard should I start out with?
For beginners the most enjoyment can be obtained by using a Mini Mal. These are usually in the 7ft 3in to 8ft 6in range. They are versatile, easy to catch waves with and allow you to do both short board and longboard moves.

10) Can I bring my own surfboard and wetsuit?
Yes of course, however, sometimes the conditions may not be optimum for the board you have in which case I will suggest you hire one of mine. Similarly if you’re wetsuit is unsuitable or in poor condition I will suggest you hire one of mine.

11) Do you have an Emergency Plan?
Yes, I have an ACC hazard register that covers vehicle roadway and beach issues, along with an emergency plan. You are welcome to ask for a copy. Additionally, all participants are required to complete an acknowledgement of risk form before undertaking any classes, trips or tours.

12) Do you have insurance?
Yes, Public liability insurance is held with QBE insurance.
