Mangawhai, Te Arai and Forestry to the south, have been the “go to” beaches for surfers looking for great waves on the East Coast north of Auckland for the past 60 years. Easy access, pristine white sandy beaches, clear water and consistent surf conditions to suit all skill levels are among just a few of the reasons why.
Te Arai and Forestry are the only undeveloped beaches left between Auckland and Whangarei with kilometres of white sandy beaches and clean clear water providing some of the best surfing conditions you are likely to find anywhere and yet are close to the rapidly growing centre of Mangawhai and Mangawhai Heads which offers great surf for beginner to experienced surfers as well as many and varied eating, accommodation and “things to do” options.
Currently celebrating 10 years of value for money surf lessons of the highest standard, Aotearoa Surf School is the only Water Safety New Zealand and Surfing New Zealand approved Surf School based on Auckland’s North East Coast and operating at Mangawhai. We are the only surf school in the area to employ active local surf lifeguards as instructors.
With over 50 years international surfing, competition and coaching experience, Wayne and his team will work with you in a safe, fun, controlled environment to tailor the lesson to suit your experience level and ensure you progress quickly and get more enjoyment out of your surfing.
For beginners and novices we provide “state of the art” modern soft boards that are safe, stable and easy to ride and are specifically designed to get you up and riding as soon as possible. You’ll catch more waves and get longer rides. Beginner boards range in sizes from 7ft – 9ft so we can ensure we have the right length board for you. All our surfboards are in top condition – no missing fins or other damage that could injure you – and we have a comprehensive range of top quality, full length wetsuits for extra comfort and sun protection.
We’re not into high volume or 15 people in the water at the same time. Our 6:1 coaching ratio ensures you get plenty of “instructor time” during the lesson and we’ll spend time with you after the lesson should you want any free and unbiased advice on your surfing progress or planned surfboard and wetsuit purchase.
“We also provide a wide variety of surfboards and wetsuits for hire at very reasonable rates”.
Unlike many other surf schools we are open for business 12 months of the year offering group and private lessons, after school surfing programs and special rates for groups, friends and families, special events and corporate surfing activities.
